FeelXR

A guided VR experience for creative health and relaxation. You touch a soft orb that answers with sound, movement and colour. A short wellbeing check-in before and after the session shows how your state has changed.

The challenge

Wellbeing you can measure

The goal was to show that immersive experiences can work as measurable wellbeing interventions in cultural institutions. The app had to prove that creative play in VR leads to observable changes in mental state, measured with the WHOLI wellbeing assessment framework.

It also had to run by itself. There could be no technical setup and no staff to guide visitors, so it would be ready for galleries, museums and public installations.

Sensory design

Comfort over spectacle

The experience is tuned for comfort, flow and emotional subtlety. The visuals and audio were made with a sound psychologist and a concept designer, so every detail adds to a balanced sensory environment.

Warm, low-contrast skies, slow motion and soft-edged spheres keep the headset comfortable for first-time visitors. The orb's sounds are gentle by design. They respond to touch, but they never startle.

Project goals

  1. 01

    Measure the change

Ask the same WHOLI questions before and after every session, so each visit records a before and an after.

  2. 02

    Zero setup

Run fully on a standalone Meta Quest, from first question to goodbye, with no menus, laptops or operators.

  3. 03

    Non-verbal and inclusive

Let touch, sound and colour carry the experience, so anyone can take part whatever their language or familiarity with VR.

Session flow

One session, start to finish

Every session follows the same guided structure. Choices are made by touching spheres, and the orb is the only thing that asks for more than a moment.

  1. Six soft spheres rated 0 to 5 under “How calm or physically settled do you feel right now?” 01

    Check in

“How calm or physically settled do you feel right now?”

Four WHOLI questions, each answered by touching one of six spheres. It sets the baseline for the session.

  2. Five spheres named Float, Glow, Reflect, Settle and Rise under “Which sound group do you like best?”, one filling with a green ring 02

    Set the scene

“Which sound group do you like best?”

Pick a background environment (forest, sea, street or fireplace) and a sound palette for your touches: Float, Glow, Reflect, Settle or Rise.

  3. Eight small coloured orbs named Mist, Ember, Iris, Haze, Drift, Verdant, Dusk and Blush below a large orange orb 03

    Choose a colour

    “Please, select the color palette”

Eight palettes, from Mist to Blush. The big orb takes on your choice as soon as you touch it.

  4. A hand pressed flat against the dark, glossy side of the orb 04

    Touch the orb

    “Touch the orb”

The orb gives way under your hands. Every touch plays a gentle note and sends colour out across the environment.

  5. Hands on the pink orb in front of a large blue-violet portal, with the sky swirling around it 05

    Let it unfold

    No timer, no score.

The world shifts with you. The sky swirls and colours drift, and the session lasts as long as it feels right.

  6. Two thumbs-up hands either side of a small pink orb under “Thank you!” 06

    Check out

    “Thank you!”

The same four WHOLI questions come back, so the change in emotional state can be measured against the first answers.

  7. A finger pressing a round pink Exit button on the floor of the scene 07

    Exit

    “Exit”

One last soft button and the headset is ready for the next visitor. Nobody needs to reset it.

Data behind the calm

Every session is stored securely for later analysis, from the choices visitors make to how often they touch the orb. That way the wellbeing impact of each experience can be measured.
